This settlement-form house with a later addition was actually built during the transitional period when a variety of styles and combinations of architecture were being built in Arcata. A local carpenter, who must have been “up” on current fashion at the turn of the century, built a settlement house because of cultural influence or personal preference. A front-gable section with a side-gable “L” into which the stoop-sheltered door opens has cornice returns, frieze band, corner boards and 2/2 windows. These characteristics identify an 1880s house not one built after the turn of the century.
The residence that H. Ridgley is building himself in East Arcata is nearing completion and looms up in good style across the gulch. (Arcata Union, Jan. 17, 1903)
